When a patient breathes from a medical oxygen concentrator, they are breathing oxygen produced in real time by a small pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit packed with 13X molecular sieve. The same technology scales up to industrial air separation units (ASUs) producing thousands of cubic meters of oxygen per hour.

How PSA Separates Oxygen from Air

Air is about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. The 13X zeolite has a higher affinity for nitrogen than for oxygen because nitrogen has a larger quadrupole moment. In a PSA cycle, compressed air is passed over the sieve at high pressure; nitrogen is adsorbed while oxygen-enriched product flows through. When the pressure is released, nitrogen desorbs and is vented, regenerating the bed for the next cycle.

Medical Concentrators: Safety and Purity

Medical oxygen concentrators must deliver 87-93% oxygen at a controlled flow. The sieve bed is the core component, and its nitrogen capacity fades over time - a concentrator with degraded sieve produces lower purity and triggers flow alarms. Sieve replacement restores performance, which is why quality and consistency of the zeolite matter so much to concentrator manufacturers.

Industrial ASU Considerations

Large ASUs run longer cycles and harsher operating conditions. Key specifications include water and CO₂ removal upstream (often using 13X itself in a pre-purification unit), careful management of adsorption heat, and selection of sieve grades with optimized particle size for pressure drop.
